12/28/2022 0 Comments Spyro reignited trilogy concept artEven if it was just a small one, I just wanted a chance to see how the characters and settings of the original game were loving recreated and updated by the Toys for Bob team. But what exactly is in this book? How many pages is it? What can you expect? Let’s take a closer look before its July 21st release date.įrom the moment we started to see concept art from Spyro: Reignited Trilogy a few years ago, I had been hoping for a book like this. (And as an aspiring illustrator, I’ve seen and owned a LOT of art books). Thanks to Activision/ Blizzard, I was able to get an advance copy of the upcoming Art of Spyro: Reignited Trilogy art book and it is without a doubt the most stunning art book I have ever seen. But if you find an art book that is both loaded with art and commentary from the artists and developers themselves, congratulations! You just found a real life ‘Gem’! Others can be infuriatingly tiny – in both physical size and number of pages. Some end up sharing more screenshots than actual art. It’s a chance to get a closer look not only at the characters and settings but also can offer a glimpse into the team’s creative process. Though not all Art Books are created equal. You might think ‘well I’m not an artist, what do I gain from it’? But art books are a great way to dive deeper into your favorite video game or film. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 September 2020Art books can sometimes be an overlooked genre. It was just hard to read.īuy it if you're a fan who loves the stunning artwork but so much not if you want to see character or level concept art and in depth development of your favourite parts of the games.Īmazing art but limited character details Another issue is double spread pages with huge blocks of black text on dark purple. I recently bought the Cuphead art book and it had far more detail and concept art on their characters. I would have liked to see more concept art or test sketches of these characters. Some with vague descriptions behind their designs. Most like Ripto (who is a popular villain) only gets one page of their finished design with a brief description. Very few characters, Spyro of course being one of them, have a couple of pages or more dedicated to their concept art and the ideas behind them. This would have easily been 5 stars if it wasn't for the issues I have with the content. There's even some original pieces that seem to be made for the book. The artwork in this book is amazing and as a long time Spyro fan it was a joy to look through. Alas, what we're left with is a book which, whilst visually impressive, really only collates images which are just as easily sought online. The direction taken with this book is confusing, the gaming and art industry has seen phenomenal success with the likes of The Art of Metal Gear Solid, The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild - Creating a Champion, and the aforementioned The Art of Cuphead, and to see a fantastical, creative world such as Spyro's be so ill-explored feels genuinely disappointing. #SPYRO REIGNITED TRILOGY CONCEPT ART FULL#Where conceptual pieces could fill and bring life to a page, valuable space is instead taken up either by oversized (and often pointless) quotes, or pages full of text with no images to give credence to what is being described. Given the sheer imaginative scope that came with the Spyro reignited trilogy, it goes without saying that there would have been a lot of early concepts and designs that either changed over time, or never saw their way into the final product - Designs and concepts which would have been at home in a book such as this. Unlike the creative sledgehammer that is "The Art of Cuphead", The Art of Spyro: Reignited Trilogy is little more than a book of final art renders.
